Fortnite developer, Epic Games has changed the competitive landscape in the world of gaming platforms by presenting their Gaming Store, the Epic Games Store.

Epic Games Store is currently arguably a tough competitor to Steam because the taxes demanded by Epic Games are less than Steam. This was also realized by the game publisher Cities: Skylines who supported their game to be present in the Epic Games Store.

Fredrik Wester, Executive Chairman of the Board at Cities: Skylines Paradox Interactive, said that Steam taking 30% of the tax is outrageous.

“I think the 70/30 revenue share is outrageous,” he said. “I think platform holders are taking too much money.” Wester said.

Wester also continued that using the 70/30 rule is something very ancient. Maybe it makes sense that the game industry at that time was still dominated by physical media, namely CDs. However, now it has changed where today’s games are in digital form, especially PCs.

Epic Games Store Is a Great Place for Beginner Developers

Wester continued that Epic’s policy of paying developers 88% makes them more enthusiastic about making games. Because, their efforts are considered more valuable than Steam.

“I think that the rule is unfair. I mean, how much did it actually cost to distribute the game? When there is too little competition, the big platforms will take advantage of so much. And when the competition gets bigger, the companies will definitely lower their share,” said Wester.
