Reporting with @TimBontemps: Washington Wizards F Davis Bertans has decided to sit out the Orlando restart, sources tell ESPN. Bertans is entering the free agency off of his most productive NBA season – with two ACL injuries in his past.

Bertans is playing for a lucrative deal after the breakout 2019-2020 season in which he averaged 15.4 points per game with a percentage shoot of 42.4% from 3-points and made him a candidate for the Most Improved Player of the Year award.

In addition, with the Wizards with a winning streak (24-40) trailing the Orlando Magic by 5.5 games for the playoff seeds at the Eastern Conference, the Latvian star is prioritizing his future over making it to the playoffs.
According to Bertans agent Arturs Kalnitis, the forward made a last-minute decision to sit or not play after the NBA disclosed the relatively small penalty for players who chose not to go to Florida.
“When the NBA announced that a player who did not play would not be penalized and would only lose 1% of their salary for each match missed, we discussed this,” Kalnitis told HoopsHype. “Davis is going to sign the biggest deal of his life, so he’s going to take big risks playing. It wasn’t a difficult decision, if the Wizards were seeded fifth or sixth (or maybe even seeded eighth) it would be very different. “

Kalnitis also said that the franchise also understands their options, noting that Davis Bertans also informed his teammates of his decision before the report was out.
“The Wizards players have also been aware of Davis’s decision for several days and Davis told his team-mates before it was reported as well. They are very supportive. [GM] Tommy [Sheppard] is the best .. he and Davis have a special relationship… Davis told me they had a great conversation and they were very supportive, ”continued agent Bertans.
According to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, Bertans will lose $ 520,000 if the Wizards don’t progress past the eight-game seed in Orlando. Washington is reportedly hoping to re-sign Bertans for a long-term deal at the end of the season.
