Valve Resets MMR Dota 2, here are the changes

After previously being reluctant to reset MMR Dota 2, Valve finally kept its promise to reset it. In accordance with the promised date, starting today Valve has reset the MMR. To reset the MMR, you can open the game settings menu then look for the new MMR Recalibration section under the Account tab.

Regarding the reset time, Valve will give a time from October 22 to November 22, 2020. This is done to prevent players from recalibrating all at once. Meanwhile, the reset can only be done once and is available at any time until the ranking season.

Dota 2 MMR Reset System

Dota 2 MMR Reset System

On its official website, Valve describes in detail the additions that will be in the next season. In addition, the MMR reset that will be applied in the next season will be similar to the Overwatch system used in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS: GO).

“We made the MMR reset optional, and for those who want to participate, we instead spread it so it doesn’t create too much volatility at the same time (besides the volatility that was already there when you entered the calibration). We hope this will remove most of the drawbacks of resetting MMR, and let people who really want to do it can do it in a more stable environment,” said Valve.

This system was deliberately adopted by Valve from CS:GO because Dota 2 will implement the same system as CS:GO. In addition, this system is also presented to be used to prevent the entry of cheaters who have the potential to damage the game ecosystem into the Dota 2 game. However, Valve explained that this system is still in the testing process. If it is available Valve promises to provide more information.

Valve also added that they have made improvements to the smurf account detection system and the Dota 2 booster. Smurf accounts themselves can currently only play with other low-scoring Smurf accounts.

Meanwhile, to eradicate booster accounts, Valve has stepped up efforts to eliminate boosters through the booster account detection system. As a result, more than 14,000 booster accounts were blocked in the last 30 days. This change will certainly significantly improve the playing experience for players. The new Dota 2 system itself is planned to be calibrated every six months.

“In the past we have seen a lot of negative aspects forcing everyone to reset their MMR at the same time. It has become part of our reluctance to continue resetting every 6 months.”

Medal System Change

Medal System Change

With the start of this MMR reset, players have the opportunity to calibrate 10 matches to determine what medals will be obtained later. Unlike before, in this 10th calibration, all performance from all matches will not affect Valve’s new system. Because medals are determined by the percentage of wins or losses.

Another change that will come to fill the new season is the loss of the medal system. Where zero-star medals will be lost and replaced with 1-star to 5-star medals. Even though the system changes but the order or level, the existing medals will still be the same. Namely as follows:

  • Tier 1 Rank – Herald
  • Tier 2 Rank – Guardian
  • Tier 3 Rank – Crusader
  • Tier 4 Rank – Archon
  • Tier 5 Rank – Legend
  • Tier 6 Rank – Ancient
  • Tier 7 Rank – Divine
  • Tier 8 Rank – Immortal

For the ranking system, Dota 2 still uses a 5-star division. Where this setting applies to Party and Solo. It’s just that the Solo game has a greater significance than the party. Not to forget, players who managed to get 5 stars in Divine will automatically be displayed on the Leaderboards. Meanwhile, each player’s medal will also be displayed on their respective profiles.

The good news is that Valve ensures that there is no medal drop system. In other words, the medals that you have earned will never go down and can only go up. This is also a sign that the player has been in the best rank. If you are an old player in Dota 2 then you are entitled to an Immortal medal which is specifically given by Valve.

The question is, is the system applied to competitive games like this really able to eradicate riotous players? Let’s wait and see.
