Hero Buff and Nerf on Patch ML January 2021. Meta Changed Again?
Many Assassins cannot be used in the December 2020 update patch because of the nerf for buffs obtained from jungle monsters. Especially for Assassins who really need blue buffs like Ling and Fanny, there is a 15 second pause where the hero has no buff except stealing buffs in the opponent’s area which is much more risky.
This makes the Assassin meta less effective so that many players prefer Marksman (MM) as their jungler hero. Because of this, Moonton did several buffs for ML heroes in this January 2021 patch:
Hero Buff
1. Ling
Passive buffed:
- Base energy regen increased from 3 to 5
- Energy regen increased from 5 to 8 when Ling was over the wall
This caused Ling to become not too dependent against the blue buff like now.
2. Fanny
Passive buffed. Base energy regen increased from 3 to 4. Just like Ling, this is done by Moonton so that Fanny not too dependent with blue buff.
3. Mathilda
Optimized Skill 2 from Mathilda. It is still unclear which part of this skill was improved but it looks like the jump distance that Mathilda’s colleagues can use will be further so that it will be easier to do combos with these heroes: Gord, Odette, Badang, Guinevere, Silvanna, and Khaleed.
4. Alpha
Skill 2 buff:
- Base damage from strikes increased from 250-400 to now 350-500 (level dependent scaling)
- The base HP regen obtained from skill 2 has also increased from 125-200 to 125-250.
With this Alpha has been officially buffed for the fourth time since July 2020. Even though without this buff, SPIN Esports has predicted that this hero will become a meta hero in Season 19, what will Alpha be like with the addition of this buff.

5. Clint
2 Clint cooldown skill reduced from 10-8 seconds to 8-6.5 second. Like Alpha, Clint is also one of the heroes we predict to enter the Season 19 meta. This buff is very good for Clint because he still has weaknesses when being targeted by melee heroes.

6. Terizla
- Cooldown skill 1 reduced from 10-8 seconds to 7 second
- Damage skill 2 was only 50% to minions, increased to 60%
Terizla is the number one hero who doesn’t sell well in Mobile Legends (ML) season 19. So this hero must be buffed. However, according to the author, it seems that this is not enough to make this hero more frequently picked
7. Grock
- Physical attack skill 1 bonus increased from 120% to 160% (damage scaling depends on the length of time to charge)
- HP regen when near a wall increased from 3 + (1.6% x Level) to 15 + (1.6 x Level)
Just like Terizla, Grock is a hero on the list of 10 most unsold ML heroes in season 19. One of the reasons Grock is rarely picked is the insane nerf received by Grock’s damage skill 1. With this buff, Grock might be more viable to pick even though it’s still situational.
8. Balmond
- Cooldown skill 1 reduced from 11-8.5 seconds to 8.5 seconds
- The slow effect of skill 1 is nerfed from 40% for 2.5 seconds to become 30% During 2 second
The buff needed by Balmond, who is now out of Meta because he is unable to compete with other meta fighters.
9. Hanabi
Passive buff all the way
- Shield converted from lifesteal increased from 40% to 100%
- Max shield increased from 20% HP Hanabi to 25%
This makes Hanabi able to survive stronger in team fight with high lifesteal and shield. Uniquely, Hanabi is one of the most popular heroes in Epic but is missing in the Mythic tier. Can Hanabi enter the Mythic meta with this as well? It’s interesting for us to watch together, spinners.

Hero Nerf
1. Brody
- Base physical attack reduced from 115 to 105
- HP regen increased from 12 to 14
According to SPIN Esports, this is actually more in the direction of nerf. Because for a Marksman (MM) damage is much more important than HP regen.
We consider this the right thing because Brody is the most feared Marksman (MM) today with a win rate of 55.3% and a tire rate of 87.5%! Is this enough to make Brody less overpowered (OP)?
2. Luo Yi
- Base reaction damage decreased from 450 to 400
- Magic power bonus increased from 180% to 195%
This is necessary because Luo Yi is a support mage hero who has the most damage in the early game, especially in the midlane where early battles often occur. So you could say this is more nerf than buff.
3. Claude
Base damage from each ultimate hit decreased from 120-160 to 100-130. Claude is one of the heroes who is always buffed or nerfed in almost every patch. This hero is very difficult to balance because with a buff or nerf he can just go in and out of meta.
But looking at the situation, it seems necessary to nerf Claude because currently this hero is one of the MMs with the highest win rate (55%).
