Now eSports is officially a sport to be contested at the SEA Games

GridGames.ID – Thanks to its fame, eSports are even competed in a number of prestigious sporting events. As in the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia, although it is still an exhibition and has not yet been contested for medals.

Now, eSports are officially part of the sport being contested for medals that will debut at the SEA Games next year.

The biennial sporting event involves participants from 11 countries in Southeast Asia and will be held in the Philippines in 2019.

The SEA Games will mark the first time eSports has been included as a legal medal sport under the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The Philippines SEA Games Organizing Committee (PhilSGOC) and the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) have teamed up with gaming company Razer to bring competitive gaming to such a sporting event for the first time in history.

So far, popular mobile game titles Mobile Legends: Bang Bang has been confirmed as one of the six eSports game titles that will be contested.

Later, six gold medals will be contested which will be divided into three platforms, namely: mobile games, PC and consoles, each of which will compete for two game titles.

“Esports has been a staple since Razer was founded, and we’ve supported a lot events globally, tournaments, teams and athletes over the past decade and a half,” said Min-Liang Tan, co-founder and CEO of Razer.

“The sport and fighting spirit that exists in eSports is no different from any other type of sport, and we have worked hard to include it in international sporting events such as the 2019 SEA Games.”

Besides Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, five other game titles will reportedly only be announced on December 15th.
